This is a picture of me when I was a member of Exposé. I think many of you may relate to how staring at old pictures might make one feel—out of body! In many ways I still feel like a teenager on the inside but my exterior has (ahem) changed a bit. I have a friend who likens aging to being a shiny new car that’s been in an accident. You can fix it up but it never drives quite the same!
I’m not against plastic surgery because I have friends who’ve done it. I think we should all do whatever we can to feel good about ourselves. They get a nip or a tuck and once the swelling goes down, they look and feel like a million bucks. I think that’s incredible! I’m just a chicken when it comes to such things. Bawk-bawk-bawk!
I try to eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water but my work schedule is 24/7, 365 with a busy family life as well, so I find it difficult to sleep or get to a yoga class or EEK! THE. GYM. I’m trying to do what I can do—hike the stairs, or squeeze in a 15 – 20 minute yoga DVD workout in the morning. It’s hit and miss, but at least I’m making an effort nowadays.
This is a photo of me in New York last week performing at Webster Hall for Coffee Music Project. Although my exterior has changed, sometimes I wish I could take a photo of my inner workings. I wish people could see my spiritual, mental, emotional growth. I wish they could see the “me” who is more accepting of self, who is a wife-mother-soulrocker-entrepreneur-nurturer-adventurer-creator. The better “me” than the one in the photograph without my pants on! There is a type of beauty that cannot be captured on film, but is seen by others who share similar growth rings. It’s a beauty shared and reciprocated by those you love. It’s an Inside Out Beauty that should be celebrated more often!
So you know what? I’m okay with this vessel for now. And I’m going to do the very best I can to take better care of it! I’m going to feed it nutritious, organic, non-gmo food/beverages and I’m going to continue to feed my soul with music, family, friends, books, art, adventure and beautiful people like you! Oh—and walk/nap with my dog more often!
Here’s a recipe I made a few nights ago I’d modified from The Vibrant Table to Anya Kassof. I posted a picture of it on Twitter (@KellyMoneymaker) and some of you asked me to share the recipe. Enjoy!
1 C rolled oats
1 C quinoa flakes (I used flax meal)
½ C walnuts (ground into meal in food processor)
½ C chia seeds
1 teaspoon sea salt (I used truffle salt)
1 C boiling water
2 T Olive oil
2 ½ C chopped cauliflower florets
1 minced garlic clove
pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
Preheat oven to 375 F. In a large bowl, combine oat flour, walnuts, chia seeds and salt. Pour boiling water over ingredients and mix to combine. Let sit for 5 minutes then add olive oil and mix by hand. Pulse cauliflower into small pieces in food processor then add to dough. Mix by hand til you have a ball of dough. Lightly oil a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and place dough on top with another piece of parchment on top of dough and roll out til you cover cookie sheet with even layer. Remove top parchment and bake for 40 minutes.
In Anya’s recipe, she uses broccoli rabe but I use whatever veggies I have in the house. This time around, I used sliced olives, mushrooms and kale sautéed in olive oil and truffle salt, fresh rosemary and pine nuts. I baked for another 10 minutes and served to my voracious little family!
And here’s to getting your Inside Out Beauty on! This is an intimate song from my new STONE LP titled “You Know How To Love Me”!
While I was in London, I found unique items at Absolute Vintage Clothing that helped me get my “Inside Out Beauty” on for UK shows! I had the honor of singing in-store so I went shopping after my set!
The manager, Toks, is one of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. She got her start in the fashion industry working at Top Shop then Absolute Vintage while she was at University. She became hooked on the interesting costumers and the funky-cool clothes so she returned to Absolute Vintage then became manager of two London locations.
I have never been in a more organized vintage store in my life! All the beautiful items are sorted by color so if you’re looking for that perfect dress to match your lavender shoes, you don’t have to dig through piles of clothes—just go to the purple rack. I could’ve spent DAYS in there! You may buy items online as well www.AbsoluteVintageUK.com.
Speaking of Inside Out Beauty—I want to wish my dad, John Moneymaker, A Very Happy 75th Birthday today! Love you, Poppa!
